animate faithJoin us every Sunday after service beginning on Sunday, June 23rd for the Animate Faith series. Pastor Harry will lead a thoughtful discussion that begins with a short video of a current Christian thinker and then conversation in response to the questions and prompts put forward by the video speaker. Adult Education will continue most Sundays this summer and also include a couple of special presentations. Watch for further info.

Coming Soon!

Vacation Bible School (VBS) will take place from Monday, August 19th – Friday, August 23rd. We will have dinner and a program for children AND a program for parents following our meal. We are looking for volunteers who would like to come together and make a meal for our VBS attendees. It's a great way to get to know the kids AND their parents. If able to assist in this manner, please contact Angie Brooke.

Vacation Bible School for Grown Ups

Monday, August 19th through Friday, August 23rd in the evening, while the children are having their VBS, the adults are invited to read and discuss the Bible stories that the youth are sharing, from an adult perspective with Pastor. Please plan to arrive between 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. for a simple supper. Enjoy an opening devotion with the youth and then join the adult group as we ponder scripture.

Continuing Worship and Prayer during Summer Travels and Vacation

As the summer season is upon us and schedules change and many of us plan to travel, let me share as your Christian brother and as your Pastor. On vacations and in different routines it may be easy to forget to spend time in worship and prayer. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. You can easily find your local ELCA parish at the ELCA website where you click on "find a church" and enter a zipcode.

If you have an interesting worship experience and want to share, or just want to let me know what you were up to, bring a bulletin back. I am also interested to see what others are doing.

And, remember the ministry we share together as Resurrection Church goes on every day of the year, so continue your support in finances and in prayer while you may be away.

I do pray that if you do have time away this summer, it is refreshing and life giving!

Travel safely and, "God watch between us while we are away from each other."

Pastor Harry

The Passing of Dr. Emma Lou Diemer, Resurrection’s Organist from 1961-62

I just learned that Dr. Emma Lou Diemer died on June 2 in Santa Barbara, her home for decades. She was 96. Dr. Diemer was Resurrection’s organist 1961-62 while pursuing graduate studies at UMd. She was a prolific and respected composer at a time when women were seldom able to pursue a career in that field. The reversal of that situation today is due in no small part to Dr. Diemer’s pioneering influence.

Dr. Roy Guenther
Former Organist/Choirmaster, Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran Church 1969 to 2019
Professor Emeritus of Music and Executive Associate Dean Emeritus in the Columbian College of Arts & Sciences at the George Washington University (GWU)
Former Chairman of the Department of Music at GWU

Music at Resurrection

One of the goals of the Music at Resurrection committee is to seek out quality talent to perform at Resurrection Lutheran Church. Please reach out to Cathy Carr, either in church, or by email, with your suggestions for choral or musical groups that might be available to present a concert at Resurrection.

Collection of Food Items for AFAC on Sunday, June 23

We will receive donations of food items for AFAC on Sunday, June 23 in conjunction with our regular worship service. In the coming weeks, July 7 and July 21 will also be AFAC Sundays.

Chrismons Update

beginners 13

Chrismons update: next workshop on Saturday, June 22 at 10:00 a.m.

During coffee hour, (by the fireplace), there will be individual Chrismon kits for you to look at. The ornaments come in various sizes with all of the patterns/instructions and supplies to make them (see attached photo). The current Chrismons, those in great shape and those we are replacing (or repairing), will be on display.

This is for everyone but ESPECIALLY to parents. I have specific children’s patterns for grades 1 & 2 and for grades 3 & 4. Please look at the attached Chrismons PDFs booklets, one for 1st & 2nd graders, and another for 3rd & 4th graders, and let me know which ornaments you think your kids would like to try their hand at. Or, for Resurrection Church members who think they would like to include some of these in our collection, please let me know what patterns you are interested in. These Chrismon patterns do not come in single kits so I just need to know the patterns you want and how many to order so that I can order the supplies for them.

If folks want to just take home the pattern and supplies to make one ornament, you are also welcome to do so. If you have any questions, please contact Mimi Van Poole.

Price list for any individual kit that has NOT been included in any of the group kits that are already in progress. These can be sponsored by individual members that wish to make them themselves OR would like a member of the wonderful current crafters who have volunteered to make them for you. If you see one of interest please contact me and I will order it for you. Through sponsorship (including ornaments that have already been completed), we are hoping to have tags on all of the ornaments in honor of, or in memory of, before they are blessed during the first week or two of December.

The advent of efficient music printing around 1530 spurred a market that reached well beyond traditional courtly audiences to include musically literate members of a growing merchant class. New types of social music flourished, ultimately ranging from straightforward multi-verse part songs to ambitious creations crafted to wring every nuance of image and passion from their poetry. Barbara Bulger Verdile and Darwyn Banks from the RELC Choir will sing with Carmina & Illuminare. We will present Italian and English madrigals, French chansons, villanellas, and more: http://www.carmina.org/upcomingperformances.php#25-FFM

Eight volunteers attended our first very successful meeting on Saturday, April 27th. If folks want to just take home the pattern and supplies to make one ornament, you are also welcome to do so. If you have any questions, please contact Mimi Van Poole.

Sharing Choir News

The Choir has done it again! This Easter season, church choirs who presented anthems published by St. James Music Press (SJMP) were again invited to “Share the Celebration” by submitting for review and possible selection, recordings of SJMP publications presented during a Holy Week or Easter service. SJMP selected our Good Friday presentation of Richard Shephard’s “Good Friday Reproaches” and posted access to our recording on their Facebook page. If you missed it, or would like to hear it again, follow this link and move the cursor to 1:15:37.

Of course, I’d like to extend thanks to our hard-working choir and Steve Black’s sound engineering, enabling RELC to receive this honor.

With a voice of singing, Barbara

Donations for one arrangement of altar flowers may be made for $55. Please sign up to donate on the sign-up sheet outside the kitchen.

Reconciling in Christ Learning Opportunities in the Works

In December 2023 RELC Church Council gave the green light to explore Reconciling in Christ (RIC), and the team to help do so (Shawna Bergman, Angie Brooke, Christina Cuesta, Mike Hirschberg, Gary Mortensen, Dave Oaks, Valerie Pratt, Jack Schoen and Pastor Harry Therwanger) was announced at the January annual meeting. The team has met monthly since February and is working on opportunities for the congregation to learn more about RIC throughout the coming months.

In the meantime, the team welcomes any questions or thoughts the congregation may have on RIC. An anonymous questions box with index paper has been placed on the Narthex table next to the right of the Chapel door. Or feel free to email or call Jeanne Broyhill, RIC team lead.

Please go to the RIC Works website at Home - Reconciling Works for more information. Reconciling Works is a nonprofit organization that has helped Lutheran churches since 1974 become welcoming churches "to people of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions - or LGBTQIA+ - and names its commitment to racial equity in its welcoming statement." The RIC team at RELC is using RIC Works materials as are several Lutheran churches in our area.

We will present Italian and English madrigals, French chansons, villanellas, and more: http://www.carmina.org/upcomingperformances.php#25-FFM
