Due to the pandemic the need for food is increasing daily. In addition, the annual Letter Carriers Food Drive (Stamp Out Hunger) which normally produces more than 50,000 lbs. of donated food has been canceled which makes the need even greater.
AFAC needs canned vegetables, cereal (low sugar), canned tuna, canned tomato products (stewed, diced, paste), and peanut butter (in plastic jars).
Contributions can be dropped off in the Narthex.

The “Christ in our Home" devotional books for July, August, and September arrived on Monday, April 29. The books can be picked up in the Narthex.
Pastor Harry will be away for a family funeral from Tuesday, May 7 until Tuesday, May 14. We will host Pastor Emily Ewing on Sunday, May 12th to serve at Resurrection. Pastors CJ Valenti and Alex Stall will be available for emergencies. Please call the church office at 703-532-5991 should you desire pastoral care.
Anissi Chaale, mother of our Helen Chaale, passed from this earthly life on April 30. There will be a visitation at 11:00 a.m. and funeral service at noon on Tuesday, May 7 at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 4335 16th Street, N.W. in Washington, D.C. Our tour bus was stopped at a checkpoint and we didn't get to Jerusalem! Our Wednesday evening group had great fellowship and conversation as we shared slides, video and questions about Bethlehem and felt we wanted to spend quality time in Jerusalem. So, the Holy Land Tour continues on Wednesday, May 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Join us as we "go up to Jerusalem."
The Choir has done it again! This Easter season, church choirs who presented anthems published by St. James Music Press (SJMP) were again invited to “Share the Celebration” by submitting for review and possible selection, recordings of SJMP publications presented during a Holy Week or Easter service. SJMP selected our Good Friday presentation of Richard Shephard’s “Good Friday Reproaches” and posted access to our recording on their Facebook page. Pastor Harry accepted recognition from the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) on behalf of Resurrection Lutheran as a founding congregation of AFAC at its 35th Anniversary Spring Event celebration on April 18th.
AFAC reported that it is approaching its 2 millionth meal served and has served more than 140,000 meals so far this year. Our donations and volunteers work in partnership with many others to feed those in need. For more information, visit https://www.afac.org.
We welcome your donations towards altar flowers on May 19, June 26 and June 30 should you be interested in honoring or donating flowers in memory of a family member or friend. Donations for one arrangement of altar flowers may be made for $55. Please sign up to donate on the sign-up sheet outside the kitchen.
In December 2023 RELC Church Council gave the green light to explore Reconciling in Christ (RIC), and the team to help do so (Shawna Bergman, Angie Brooke, Christina Cuesta, Mike Hirschberg, Gary Mortensen, Dave Oaks, Valerie Pratt, Jack Schoen and Pastor Harry Therwanger) was announced at the January annual meeting. The team has met monthly since February and is working on opportunities for the congregation to learn more about RIC throughout the coming months.
In the meantime, the team welcomes any questions or thoughts the congregation may have on RIC. An anonymous questions box with index paper has been placed on the Narthex table next to the right of the Chapel door. Or feel free to email or call Jeanne Broyhill, RIC team lead.

The Social Ministry Committee has designated Mandehah, LLC as the charity recipient of RELC's free-will offerings from Resurrection’s May 18th Carmina and Illuminare Concert.

One of the goals of the Music at Resurrection committee is to seek out quality talent to perform at Resurrection Lutheran Church. Please reach out to Cathy Carr, either in church, or by email, with your suggestions for choral or musical groups that might be available to present a concert at Resurrection.
We will receive donations of food items for AFAC on Sunday, May 12 in conjunction with our regular worship service. In the coming weeks, May 26 will also be an AFAC Sunday.
Calling out to all crafters - if you like to knit, bead, string wire, work w/clay (a new medium) or even just want to learn in a group (or on your own) please contact Mimi Van Poole.
During coffee hour, (by the fireplace), there will be individual Chrismon kits for you to look at. The ornaments come in various sizes with all of the patterns/instructions and supplies to make them (see attached photo). The current Chrismons, those in great shape and those we are replacing (or repairing), will be on display. I have specific children’s patterns for grades 1 & 2 and for grades 3 & 4. If anyone is interested in these, please let me know.
Our second Chrismons-making meeting will be held on Saturday, May 18, from 10:00 a.m. to Noon in the church’s lounge. Eight volunteers attended our first very successful meeting on Saturday, April 27th. If folks want to just take home the pattern and supplies to make one ornament, you are also welcome to do so. RELC’s Meal Ministry is alive and well. We are looking for volunteers who like to cook/bake when the need arises. If anyone hears of/or needs something themselves, please reach out to Pastor Harry who will let the committee chair know and we will be in touch. Alexandra Mattson, the editor of our quarterly “Steeple Light” newsletter, is, at present, also serving as the editor of our Weekly Announcements messages, working closely with Council President Leslie Nolen. From February 1st on, if you place an item in our Weekly Announcements, please give Alexandra the specific dates for the announcement to be posted. If there are no dates provided, the announcement will run for one week and then be dropped. Please, let's keep the Announcements timely.

Service of Holy Communion will once again be held in the Sanctuary at 10:00am. Everyone is asked to wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status, and to maintain social dinstance out of respect for those who cannot receive or who have chosen not to receive a Covid vaccine. Please bring a small juice glass, so that you may receive wine with Communion.
Dr. Melvin S. Lange, pastor of Resurrection Lutheran Church from 1958 to 1971, prepared the theological material for the artist, Roy Calligan, of the Hunt Stained Glass Studios in Pittsburgh, PA. The meaning of each of the seventeen windows is indicated by a Bible verse. The theme begins with the window to the left of the lectern (when facing the altar) and proceeds around the nave toward the back, and then forward on the opposite side toward the last window to the right of the pulpit.

We are a church that strives to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God (Micah 6:8). We do justice by serving our community through our social outreach activities and through contributions of finances and member’s time to local programs, including, for example, Lutheran Social Services. We provide opportunities for a rich Christian education to our members and to the community. Many of our members are active in synod activities and in ecumenical activities with other Christians.
We love kindness in the Christian work we do, often quietly but resolutely, for our members and for the community. Benevolence has always been a priority for our church, and we are a significant donor both in our financial resources and, perhaps more importantly to us, our member’s time. We are active with food assistance programs in the Arlington area and to other social service organizations.
We strive to walk humbly with our God in our worship services. We take liturgy, prayer, and music very seriously in our church as a path through which our parishioners can experience the word and sacrament in their lives. Finally, we are excited about offering the sacrament of communion to our parishioners at every Sunday service and believe it is important that we continue to do so.
